BENGALURU: Farmers who rely on the Cauvery for their livelihood have for long looked to political leaders to resolve the decades-old dispute.
However, in a move towards greater self-determination, a water expert on Thursday sought the revival of the Cauvery Family – a body comprising farmers, engineers, water experts and economists – in a bid to find amicable solutions to the crisis.
“If everything is fine, both the states will soon discuss to find a solution for the Cauvery problem. Already primary steps have been taken regarding the issue,” water conservationist Janakarajan told Vijay Karnataka.
Affirming that inter-state water disputes could be resolved only through dialogue, and not in courts, Janakarajan said, “The row could have been resolved amicably had then Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa agreed to meet Cauvery family members. But now the situation is different, hope current CM Edappadi K Palaniswami agrees to meet members of the family.”
“In Cauvery issue, we should realise many aspects. To avoid conflicts, first should concentrate on peaceful talks between two states, very soon our team will meet both CMs in Bengaluru or in Chennai. Current situations of Cauvery, water conservation, moderation of water and other things will also be discussed,” he added.
Meanwhile, farmer leader KS Puttannaiah claimed,”Both states have lost Rs 1,10,000 crore in Cauvery related issues and Karnataka itself lost Rs 80,000 crore. To overcome from this huge loss, peace talk only the solution.”
Cauvery family was formed in 2013 and since then it has met 11 times.
